How to Love Yourself: Step Four

how to love yourself. step four. Be kind. Be gentle with yourself.

Be Kind and Gentle with Yourself

In step three, we looked at how to stop scaring yourself by noticing the catastrophic thoughts that tell you everything’s about to fall apart. Now let’s move to step four.

When you’ve spent years scaring yourself with worry or perfectionism, it’s not enough to simply stop the thoughts, you have to replace them with kind and gentle ones.

The truth is, this work is brave. You’re trying to change beliefs you’ve carried for decades. You might be learning that it’s okay to make mistakes. And, you’re learning that softness isn’t weakness. Softening is how you heal.

Ask yourself this: How would I treat my dearest friend if they were struggling?
Now, try offering that same warmth to yourself.

Why it’s So Hard to Be Kind and Gentle with Yourself?

For many of us, being kind and gentle with ourselves doesn’t come naturally. We were taught to be strong, capable, and self-reliant, and to keep going, no matter what.

And yet, that constant pressure to cope, to do more, to be better, leaves us burnt out and disconnected. You might even feel guilty for resting, or uncomfortable slowing down.

But kindness isn’t weakness. It is wisdom.
Gentleness isn’t indulgence. It is self-respect.
Patience isn’t laziness. It is trust in your own timing.

When you practise being kind, gentle, and patient with yourself, you’re retraining your nervous system. You’re telling your mind and body: I’m safe now. I can stop rushing. I’m allowed to take care of myself.

A Client Story: The Shower Moment

A client once told me that every morning, she rushed from the shower in a panic. I’ve got to get dressed, I’ve got to get the kids to school and then get to work. The whole experience felt stressful and joyless.

We talked about slowing down. And we got curious about the message her daughter might be learning from watching her rushing around all the time, feeling stressed and unhappy. Was she learning that being a woman means sacrificing yourself for everyone else? That there’s no time for pleasure or care?

That conversation changed everything. My client realised that the very least she could do, for herself and her daughter, was to make her shower a small act of love. To breathe, take her time, maybe even put on a bit of moisturiser. Just five minutes of gentle self-care.

That’s where self-kindness begins: in the smallest, quietest moments.

How to Practise Being Kind and Gentle with Yourself

You can’t bully yourself into feeling better. You have to soothe yourself into it.

Here are three small ways to begin:

  1. Speak softly to yourself. When you make a mistake, try saying, “It’s okay, I’m learning a new way of doing things.”
  2. Slow down your mornings. Take five mindful minutes just for you. A slower shower, a hot cup of tea, a deep breath before the day begins.
  3. Notice progress, not perfection. Healing takes time. Trust your pace.

Every time you do this, you’re showing your inner self that love is possible. Not through achievement, but through gentleness.

Journal Prompts:

  • What kind words did you long to hear when you were young, or wish you heard more often now?
  • How could you say those words to yourself or show yourself that kindness?
  • What small steps could you take this week to treat yourself with the same care you offer others?
  • How could you show patience with yourself today, in words, or action?

Activity: Schedule a Kindness Date with Yourself

  • Pencil in 30 minutes of you-time this week.
  • Choose something that nourishes you, not anyone else.
  • As you do it, notice any guilt or self-criticism that arises, and gently remind yourself: I’m allowed to take up space. I’m allowed to take my time, I’m allowed to put myself first.

And a practical tip — fill up the fuel in your car when it hits a quarter. Because you can’t run on empty, not emotionally and not literally.
