Forgive Yourself
Forgiving yourself isn’t about excusing what you did, it’s about freeing yourself from the emotional weight of the past.
When you hold onto self-blame, it’s like drinking poison every day and hoping it will somehow heal you. That tight, punishing energy keeps your vibration low. It reinforces beliefs like “I’m not good enough” or “there’s something wrong with me.”
But here’s the truth: you were doing the best you could with the awareness, tools, and support you had at the time.
When you ask, “How do I forgive myself?” start by remembering that love and growth don’t come from shame. They grow from compassion, understanding, and a willingness to let go.
The Link Between Self-Criticism and Forgiveness
If you read last week’s step: Stop All Criticism; you’ll already see the connection. Criticism fuels guilt; guilt feeds self-judgment; and self-judgment blocks forgiveness. When you soften your inner voice, you open the door to forgive yourself.
Forgiveness becomes possible when you stop telling yourself that mistakes define who you are. They don’t. They’re just part of being human.
When you forgive yourself, you release the emotional charge and create space for calm, clarity, and lightness. Sometimes tears will come, let them. Tears are your body’s natural way of letting go.
Journal Prompts:
✍️ What are you holding onto that you might need to forgive yourself for?
✍️ What did you learn from this experience?
✍️ How can you be more compassionate toward yourself today?
A Healing Practice:
If you’re ready to take the next step, try this gentle release ritual.
- Write a letter to yourself: express what you feel sorry about, what you regret, what you’re ready to forgive.
- Create a sacred space: light a candle, add crystals, or play soft music. Make it feel special.
- End your letter with: “I forgive myself and I set myself free.”
- When you’re done, burn or tear the paper as a symbolic act of release. The full moon is a powerful time to do this, but any day you choose to let go is good enough.
A Daily Activity:
- Close your eyes and take a deep breath.
- Notice where guilt or resentment is showing up in your body, eg chest, stomach, jaw.
- Breathe deeply and imagine exhaling that energy out of your body.
- Then, gently say to yourself: “I’m willing to forgive. I’m learning to let go.”
💜 Even being willing to forgive is a powerful start.
