The hidden link between anxiety and overachieving.

Have you ever found yourself thinking why am I successful but still unhappy?

It might sound somethink like…

I should be happy—I have everything I’ve always wanted.
I‘ve worked so hard for this, why do I still feel anxious and unfulfilled?
Something must be wrong with me…

You’re not alone. Many successful people struggle with this, even if no one talks about it.

The Hidden Link Between Achievement & Anxiety

The relentless drive for success can unconsciously become a way to avoid uncomfortable emotions. And this keeps you stuck in a cycle of busyness. But the cost of suppressing difficult feelings—like anger, sadness, or fear—is that firstly that we end up suppressing the positive ones, like joy and excitement. But we also create more anxiety. Anxiety is known as an inhibitory emotion, popping up to keep all those emotions down. This means we can’t selectively suppress emotions. When we push down the uncomfortable ones, we also mute the good ones! That’s why you might find yourself outwardly successful, but still feeling unhappy.

Do you think you might have been numbing difficult emotions? Maybe through overworking, overthinking, or always keeping busy. Then you are likely also blocking yourself from fully experiencing happiness, joy, peace, and excitement.

The good news is that you can start to reconnect with your emotions in a safe and gentle way.

What Can I Do?

💡 Start to Notice, Notice, Notice (Without Judgment) – Pay attention to moments when you distract yourself instead of feeling your feelings. Do you reach for your phone when sadness creeps in? Fill your schedule to avoid silence? Simply noticing these habits is the first step towards changing them.

💡 Create Space for All Emotions – Give yourself permission to feel. Journalling, mindfulness, or even saying “Right now, I feel sad, and that’s okay” can help you to stretch your emotional window of tolerance.

💡 Reconnect with Your Body – Emotions live in the body, not in the head. Practices like deep breathing, grounding exercises, or movement (walking, stretching, dancing) can help you process feelings rather than suppress and numb them.

💡 Challenge the Fear of Feeling – If you’ve learned that emotions are “too much” or “a distraction,” remind yourself: Feeling doesn’t make you weak—it makes you whole.

💡 Seek Support if Needed – Counselling, EMDR therapy, or inner healing work can help you process suppressed emotions in a safe, supportive way. You don’t have to do it alone.

The more you allow yourself to feel, the more you’ll reconnect with happiness, excitement, and peace. It’s not about forcing joy but making space for the full range of your emotions—including the ones you’ve been avoiding.
