Do you often feel like you’re not doing enough, being enough, or achieving enough? Many of us are our own harshest critics, holding ourselves to impossible standards while offering kindness and patience to everyone else. If this sounds familiar, you might need some self-compassion techniques.
Self-compassion is the act of treating yourself with the same understanding and care that you would give to a loved one. It’s not about letting yourself off the hook—it’s about recognizing that you are human, worthy of kindness, and doing the best you can. Below are five signs you might need more self-compassion, along with simple self-compassion techniques to help you shift your mindset.
1 – Your Inner Critic is Loud and Unkind
If your self-talk is filled with harsh criticism, you may be making your anxiety and self-doubt worse! Constantly telling yourself that you’re not good enough can really bring your mood down and take a toll on your emotional well-being.
✅ Try This: When you catch yourself being overly critical, ask: Would I say this to a friend? If not, reframe the thought with kindness.
2 – You Struggle to Forgive Yourself
Do you replay past mistakes and find it hard to move on? Guilt and shame are inhibitory emotions, designed to keep your real feelings down so holding onto them is stressful.
✅ Try This: Use your journal to write about past mistakes, but write from the perspective of a kind and compassionate friend. Offer yourself the same forgiveness and understanding that you would free give to someone else.
3 – You Push Yourself Beyond Your Limits
If you feel guilty for resting or believe that you have to meet everyone else’s needs and there is no time for yourself, you might tend to push through or overgive.
✅ Try This: Schedule small breaks for yourself and remind yourself: Rest is not a reward—it’s a necessity.
4 – You Feel Like You’re Never ‘Enough’
Do you achieve goals your goals only to feel like it’s still not good enough? This perfectionist mindset can create chronic stress.
✅ Try This: Celebrate small wins and repeat the affirmation: I am enough exactly as I am.
5 – You Dismiss Your Own Feelings
If you often think, “I shouldn’t feel this way” or “Others have it worse,” you may be invalidating your own emotions.
✅ Try This: Instead of judging your feelings, acknowledge them with kindness. Say: “It’s okay to feel this. My emotions are valid.”
