“Emotions are a critical source of information for learning”
Joseph E. LeDoux
Emotions serve as vital signals, helping us recognise what is dangerous, what is unfair, or what we need.
Think of emotions like the warning lights on your car’s dashboard
They alert us when something needs attention, like the tyre pressure, fuel levels, we need to slow down, or the engine is overheating.
Emotions are with us from the very beginning of our lives. If you watch a new-born baby, no one has to teach them how to feel.
Yet, many of us were taught to ignore or suppress our emotions, or we may have even learned that it is not OK to have them. We stop listening to our emotions and learn to disconnect and disregard these important signals.
We are missing crucial information about our well-being
Going back to our engine example, it is like saying I do not want to feel uncomfortable or anxious if the engine lights come on, so I am going to disconnect all the wires. I must be weak or defective if the engine light comes on, so I will just ignore them! How unrealistic does that sound?
In the coming weeks, I will be sharing insights on various emotions and the message they might trying to communicate with us. By noticing and tuning into these emotional signals, you will better understand yourself, much like monitoring your car’s dashboard.
Stay tuned for more on recognising and understanding your emotions!
