If you’re anything like me, you were not taught the true role of emotions. You’ve probably heard the same words as me all your life: “stop crying”, “don’t be weak”, “get over it” and “you’re too sensitive”!
The Stiff Upper Lip
This old fashioned stiff upper lip attitude is often conditioned into us from a very young age, so we are taught to control, suppress and ignore our emotions. But what if I told you that this common approach to our emotions is entirely misguided?
Rather than emotions being the enemy; they are essential messengers that serve a crucial purpose in our lives. They offer valuable insights into what is going within us and around us. For example, when we feel anger, it might be signalling that our boundaries have been crossed. When we feel sadness, it’s often an indication that we need to slow down and process a loss. And when we experience joy, it’s a sign that we are aligned with something that brings us deep fulfilment.
Suppressed Emotions
When we bottle up these emotions, refusing to acknowledge them or let them out, they don’t just vanish— they stay with us, simmering endlessly below the surface. And over time, this can lead to a build-up of stuck, unresolved feelings, which manifest as anxiety, stress, or even physical ailments.
Rather than emotions being weak, they are meant to move through us. Like visitors stopping by to deliver a message before moving on.
