I used to think that if I could just get enough time off, I’d finally feel better. A proper break. A few weeks to rest. No pressure. No deadlines. No constantly thinking about everyone else. However, when I finally stopped… my body seemed to say:
“Right. We can collapse now.” Instead of feeling refreshed, I got ill.
I think so many women are living like this.
We push through exhaustion because somewhere along the way we learned that being busy means we’re doing life “properly.” We wear productivity like a badge of honour. We tell ourselves we’ll rest later. After the next deadline. After the kids need us less. After work calms down.
The nervous system doesn’t work like that. Sometimes rest doesn’t “fix” us because we are not simply tired. We are emotionally, mentally, and physically overloaded. That’s nervous system exhaustion.
What Is Nervous System Exhaustion?
Nervous system exhaustion happens when your body and mind have been in survival mode for far too long. You might look high-functioning on the outside. In fact, many women I work with are incredibly capable. They keep going. They hold everything together. They are the reliable one.
But internally? Their minds won’t switch off.
They overthink constantly.
They feel wired and tired.
They struggle to relax.
Even resting feels uncomfortable.
Sometimes they finally get time off and suddenly:
- they become emotional
- they get headaches
- they sleep for days
- they feel anxious for “no reason”
- or their body gets ill
This can feel frightening. However, often it is the nervous system finally realising it is safe enough to stop bracing. Your body isn’t failing you. It’s communicating with you.
Why Rest Alone Sometimes Isn’t Enough
Rest is important. Of course it is. However, nervous system exhaustion often needs more than a holiday or a duvet day. Because true recovery is not only about stopping physically. It is also about feeling safe emotionally. Many women have spent years:
- over-giving
- people pleasing
- suppressing emotions
- staying hyper-alert
- carrying the emotional load
- criticising themselves internally
So even when the body stops, the mind keeps running. The nervous system is still scanning for danger. Still thinking. Still planning. Still overanalysing. That’s why some women feel guilty when resting. Or restless. Or emotionally flat.
Sometimes slowing down actually brings feelings to the surface that were previously being numbed by busyness. And yes, that is usually quite uncomfortable, because we are not used to them. However, it is also an important part of starting to heal.
Signs You May Be Experiencing Nervous System Exhaustion
Here are some signs I commonly see in therapy and EMDR sessions:
- You wake up tired even after sleep
- Your mind feels constantly “busy”
- You can’t ever fully switch off
- You feel emotionally numb
- Small things suddenly feel huge
- You struggle to enjoy downtime
- You feel guilty for resting
- You say things like “I should be able to cope”
If this sounds familiar, please know this: you are not lazy, weak, or failing. Your nervous system may simply be overloaded.
What Actually Helps Nervous System Exhaustion?
In my work as a Counsellor and EMDR therapist, I often help women understand why their nervous system feels stuck in overdrive. Once we understand the “why,” we can begin responding with compassion instead of criticism. For example:
1. Reduce internal pressure
Notice how often you speak harshly to yourself. Many women are exhausted from the inside out.
2. Stop treating rest as something you must earn
Rest is a human need, not a reward for productivity.
3. Learn to name your feelings
Emotions that are ignored often stay stuck in the nervous system. You can start with my free Feelings Wheel
4. Calm the overthinking
Overthinking is often the mind trying to create safety. Download my free 5-Step Reset to Calm Overthinking
5. Practise kinder self-talk
The nervous system responds to compassion more than criticism. Here are my free 52 Self-Love Affirmations
You Were Never Meant to Carry This Much Alone
Sometimes the most healing thing is realising that your worth is not earned through exhaustion. You are allowed to rest before breaking point. You are allowed to slow down without justifying it. And you are allowed to stop treating exhaustion like there’s something wrong with you.
