When Emotional Numbing Looks Like Strength
A lot of women I work with describe themselves as “the strong one.” They cope. Get things done. Keep going long after their body and heart are begging for rest. And somewhere along the line, “being strong” became mixed up with not feeling anything at all.
Emotional numbing often starts with something painful, a loss, a trauma, a childhood where you had to grow up fast. You learned that the safest thing you could do was stop showing emotion. You stopped yourself from crying, learned not to react and kept any feelings at arm’s length. Don’t let it in. Just cope.
And in many ways, it worked. You held your life together. People relied on you. From the outside, you looked incredibly capable. But emotionally? Things got quieter. Flatter. More distant.
This is the sneaky thing about emotional numbing: you don’t get to pick and choose which feelings get switched off. Your emotional system works in one big network. If you shut down pain, joy dims too. When you block fear, closeness is harder to access. And eventually, life can start to feel more like a list of tasks than an experience you’re actually living.
Why Emotional Numbing Isn’t Real Strength
We often think numbness equals strength, but it’s actually your nervous system in a protective mode. A survival strategy. A clever one, but not a sustainable one. The brain treats overwhelming emotions a bit like a reactor overheating. Instead of dealing with the rising pressure, it dampens the whole system. You appear fine, but inside there’s a slow, steady shutdown.
This kind of emotional numbing is linked with dissociation, the brain’s way of saying, “This is too much, let me switch the volume down.” It can help you survive difficult moments, but long-term it leads to emptiness, exhaustion, and disconnection from yourself and others. What began as armour can slowly become a cage.
What Real Strength Actually Looks Like
Real strength isn’t about holding everything in. It’s not the straight face, the soldiering on, or the “I’m fine” mask you’ve perfected over the years. True strength is the ability to feel without breaking. To let emotions move through you instead of shutting them out. To stay connected and compassionate with yourself, even when life feels overwhelming.
It’s not weakness to feel. It’s human.
And the good news? Numbness isn’t permanent. Your emotional system can thaw. Carefully. Slowly. Safely.
This is the heart of my work
I help women reconnect with their emotional world in a way that feels steady, supported, and not at all catastrophic. With the right tools, heart-led talk therapy and EMDR, that frozen emotional system can slowly warm up again.
If you’re coping, functioning and “strong,” but feel empty inside… it might be time to explore another way. Get in touch to arrange a free 30 minute phone consultation where we get curious about what “thawing safely” could look like for you.
