If you’re anything like my myself and most of my clients, you’re brilliant at thinking. You can analyse, plan, research, and “talk yourself into being fine” like it’s an Olympic sport. And yet, you still feel stuck. That’s because emotions live in your body, not your brain, so thinking harder won’t help. Living in your head can actually make things worse.
Your emotions are actually trying to communicate with you, and when you learn to listen, everything will get much easier. Not always simpler, but definitely clearer.
In my work as a Counsellor and EMDR therapist (with a heart-led and spiritual psychotherapy lens), I see this all the time. When you stop treating emotions like problems and start relating to them as messengers, you move from overthinking into understanding.
Emotions as Messengers: Why You Can’t “Think” Your Way Out of Feelings
Your mind is a powerful tool, but it can’t replace emotions, which are body-based signals. Tightness in your chest, a lump in your throat, heaviness in your tummy or a sudden urge to cry in the middle of Tesco. When you try to solve your feelings with logic alone, it can feel like trying to calm a storm by giving it a spreadsheet.
Here’s what emotions often mean, in plain English:
- Anger can be your boundary system saying, “Something isn’t right, it’s important so pay attention.”
- Sadness can be your heart saying, “This feels heavy and painful, you need to slow down.”
- Fear is your safety system saying, “Be alert, something doesn’t feel safe.”
- Disgust can be your protector saying, “This doesn’t feel right for me.”
So, rather than asking “What’s wrong with me?”, try asking: “What is this feeling trying to tell me?” And if you’re not sure how to name your emotions, you are not broken. You were just never taught how. Start here by downloading my FREE FEELINGS WHEEL.
Emotions as Messengers: What Happens When You Ignore Them
Most high-functioning people don’t “lack emotions”. They’ve just become very good at managing life whilst suppressing their feelings. At first, ignoring feelings can look like strength, but feelings don’t go away just because you’ve decided you’re too busy. The nervous system is trying to keep them stored away, but eventually they come back to bite us . Over time, unprocessed emotions can show up as:
- Anxiety
- Low mood or emotional flatness
- Overthinking and self-doubt
- People-pleasing
- Snappiness, shutdown, or sudden tears
- Saying you feel “fine”… but not really feeling much at all
This is why Heart-led Talk Therapy and EMDR are such a fantastic blend. I help my clients learn:
- how emotions actually work
- how to soothe the nervous system
- how to be kinder to themselves
- how to feel safe in their body
Emotions as Messengers: How to Start Listening
(A Gentle 3-Step Practice)
You don’t need to go full “sit on a meditation cushion for 90 minutes” (unless you want to). Start small by practicing the following steps…
1) Notice
Ask yourself: “Where do I feel this emotion in my body?”
Then breathe into that area, even if it feels a bit odd at first.
2) Name
Choose the closest emotion you can. If you’re not sure, use the feelings wheel.
Naming reduces overwhelm, and calms the nervous system.
3) Need
Ask: “What do I need?”
It might be rest, reassurance, space, support, a boundary, or a good cry. Also, sometimes the need is simply: “I need to stop being mean to myself.”
