Creating Calm in Your Daily Life

How to create calm

Because our world seems to be moving faster and faster these days, finding calm right now is not just a luxury—it’s an absolute must for our nervous system and mental well-being! And whilst we can’t eliminate stress completely, we can develop some daily habits that will help us with creating calm and returning to a more peaceful state when we do feel anxious or stressed.

Here are some simple ways that you can learn to create calm in your everyday life:

1) Breathe Your Way to Creating Calm

Breathing is one of the quickest ways to shift your nervous system from stress to relaxation. Try this simple 4-7-8 breathing technique to create calm. It sends a signal to your nervous system that it is safe to relax.

Try it before bed, during a stressful moment, or anytime you need a reset.

  • Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds
  • Hold your breath for 7 seconds
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds.

2) Create a Mindful Ritual

Mindfulness is about being fully present, and it doesn’t have to mean long meditation sessions.

You can practice mindfulness in simple ways, like:

  • Drinking your morning tea or coffee slowly, savoring every sip.
  • Taking a mindful walk, noticing the sounds and sensations around you.
  • Engaging in a grounding exercise, like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique (naming 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste).

3) Set the Scene

Your environment has a huge impact on your state of mind.

Here’s how to create a calming atmosphere:

🕯️ Light a candle or use essential oils like lavender in a diffuser.

🎵 Play soft instrumental music or nature sounds.

🛑 Reduce clutter—an organised space helps promote a calmer mind.

4) Small Daily Rituals

Routines create predictability, and predictability reduces stress.

Think about adding small, calming rituals to your day:

🌞 Morning: Start with deep breaths and an intention for the day.

🕰️ Midday: Step away from your screen, stretch, and take a mindful moment.

🌙 Evening: Unwind with a cup of herbal tea, journalling, or reading.

5) Reconnect with your Body

Creating calm isn’t just about your mental state—it’s about your physical body too. Moving your body can help discharge stress and restore balance.

You can try:

  • Some gentle stretching or yoga before you go to bed.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation.
  • A warm bath or self-massage with some calming scents.

Creating calm is about small, intentional choices that add up over time. Which of these practices resonates with you the most? Start with just one today and notice how it shifts your energy.
