How to Calm Overwhelm and Think Clearly Again
Having one of those moments where everything feels too much? Mind racing, chest feels tight, and you just can’t think straight? I see this all the time in my work and it usually means your window of tolerance is full and your nervous system is overwhelmed.
Anxiety and the Window of Tolerance
When you move out of your window of tolerance, anxiety begins to rise. Your brain shifts into survival mode and your prefrontal cortex (the part responsible for thinking clearly), goes temporarily offline. In simple terms:
- Your thoughts speed up
- Your emotions intensify
- Your ability to think logically reduces
- Your mental “bandwidth” is full.
Of course, you try to think your way out of it…but thinking just isn’t available to you in that moment. There’s a sense of heaviness or even a kind of mental shutdown. That’s your system recognising: this is too much to hold.
This is exactly where the circle of control exercise for anxiety can really help.
How the Circle of Control Exercise Works
Firstly, the exercise helps you deal with the overwhelm. When you’re overwhelmed, your system doesn’t need big solutions, it needs safety and simplicity. So instead of trying to manage everything at once, it will help you separate:
- What is out of your control
- What is within your control
When you focus on what you can control, something shifts.
- Your nervous system begins to relax
- Your thoughts start to slow
- Your breathing deepens
- Your mind becomes clearer
Because instead of trying to control everything…you’re returning to what’s manageable. And that’s where calm begins.
