Avoiding Anxiety Creates More Anxiety

Aug 14, 2024 | Self Healing

4 circles in the order: anxiety, avoid, short term relief, long-term anxiety growth.

Let’s face it—most people think that keeping busy will make anxiety go away, right?

But here’s the truth: keeping busy is not the answer to anxiety. It doesn’t make it disappear; it actually makes it worse. Whilst avoidance can provide some temporary relief, in the long-term it makes it worse, because the anxiety builds up and this leads to anxiety growth.

So if you’ve been trying to distract yourself with constant busyness, you might have realised by now that this strategy isn’t working.

The Real Problem Isn’t Your Anxiety

It is not the anxiety itself that is the problem. The real problem is that you were never taught how to deal with uncomfortable feelings. Do you…?

  1. Avoid showing your feelings because it would make you look weak, right?
  2. Try not to feel your feelings because you’re worried you won’t be able to cope?
  3. Worry that if you allow yourself to feel your sadness or anger, it will overwhelm you and never go away?
  4. Suppress your feelings because you don’t know how to manage them, but this means you have to stay busy ALL THE TIME.

Here’s something for you to ponder…

  • Can you realistically maintain this level of busyness for the rest of your life?
  • How will you manage if you can’t stay busy?
  • What will you do when those repressed feelings inevitably break free?

The Good News: There’s a Solution for Anxiety!

Here’s the thing — you don’t have to stay busy for the rest of your life, nor do you have to worry about what will happen when you slow down. There’s a simple solution: your anxiety will reduce when you allow yourself to feel, name and express your emotions.

Simple? Yes.
Easy? No.

And it’s even harder to do on your own.

That’s why I created The Heart Space—an affordable and accessible way to get the encouragement, tools, and support you need to understand, express, and manage your emotions.
