“Why am I so emotional?”
“Why can’t I just stop feeling like this?”
or
“What’s wrong with me?”
Most of the women I work with come to therapy believing that their feelings are the problem. Sadness feels heavy. Anger feels uncomfortable. Anxiety feels overwhelming. So naturally, they try to push those emotions away, distract themselves, stay busy, or try and “think positive”. Here is what they soon find out…
Feelings aren’t the problem. They’re the pathway to healing.
Healing Through Emotions Starts When You Stop Fighting Them
One of the biggest myths about emotions is that they last forever. In reality, when we allow a feeling to rise and fall naturally, it usually moves through the body in around 90 seconds. It’s when we resist emotions that they stick around.
For example:
• We judge ourselves for feeling anxious
• We distract ourselves from sadness
• We suppress anger because it feels “wrong”
• We overthink instead of feeling
As a result, emotions don’t get to complete their natural cycle. They linger, loop and build.
This is often why anxiety feels so constant and that you have that feeling of dread, but you don’t know why. Healing through emotions means allowing feelings to move through you, rather than trapping them inside.
Healing Through Emotions Helps Your Nervous System Feel Safe Again
Your emotions aren’t random. They’re signals from your nervous system.
Fear shows you where safety is needed.
Sadness points to loss or unmet needs.
Anger highlights boundaries.
Disgust protects you from harm.
When you listen and pay attention to them, instead of suppressing them, your body begins to relax because it finally feels heard. This is why talk therapy combined with body-based approaches like EMDR works so powerfully. We’re not just analysing emotions, we’re allowing them to move, process, and release. Healing through emotions is how your system returns to calm.
A Simple 90-Second Emotional Release Practice
Try this the next time a feeling rises:
- Sit comfortably and place a hand on your belly
- Take slow, deep breaths into your stomach
- Name what you feel (anxious, sad, tight, heavy)
- Allow it to be there for 90 seconds
- Keep breathing
You might notice warmth, tingles, tightness or tears. That’s emotion moving through. Not something going wrong.
If you’d like extra support with naming your feelings, my FREE feelings wheel is a great place to start. It helps you understand your emotions instead of fearing them. You can also try my free Emotional Reset Guide for a gentle journalling practice that releases emotional overwhelm.
Healing Through Emotions Is Where True Confidence Begins
When you stop fighting how you feel:
• Anxiety can start to relax
• Emotional overwhelm reduces
• Self-trust grows
• Calm becomes more natural
• You feel more like yourself again
