- How to stop overthinking
You look like you’ve got it together on the outside. You’re capable. You manage things. You keep going. But inside… your mind just won’t stop. Running through conversations. Replaying things you said. Second-guessing decisions. Waking up in the early hours with your brain already busy. And the hardest part? Nothing is actually wrong, you’re left wondering, “Why can’t I just switch off?”
If that sounds familiar to you, I want you to know there is nothing wrong with you. Your mind isn’t broken. It’s trying to help. But it’s using a old strategy that no longer works.
Why do I overthink so much?
Overthinking looks like a thinking problem. But most of the time, it isn’t. It’s emotional. Many of us were never taught how to understand or feel what’s going on inside us. So we learned to cope in the only way we knew how… by thinking.
Going over things again and again.
Always wanting to get it “right”.
Needing to feel in control.
At some point in your life, emotions didn’t feel safe. So your mind stepped in and said “Let me handle this so you don’t have to feel your feelings.” And it does that by overthinking and over analysing everything. But the problem with that is it never finds a solution. It just keeps going. Which is why you can think about something for hours and still not feel any better. Overthinking doesn’t soothe your nervous system, it just keeps it busy. Busy is not the same as calm,
Why overthinking doesn’t actually help
I know that overthinking feels productive. It feels like if you just keep going, you will eventually get an answer and feel better. But what’s actually happening is that your nervous system has been activated by a memory, a trigger or something emotional, and your mind is trying to reduce the discomfort. That’s why you can’t switch off.
You might have noticed that certainty very rarely comes and the loop continues. More thinking, more analysing and more exhaustion. Over the years, you start to:
- Feel on edge most of the time
- Struggle to relax, even when things are quiet
- Feel disconnected from yourself
- Lose trust in your own decisions
Not because you’re doing anything wrong…but because your system is stuck in the loop and doesn’t know how to get out of it.
Why is overthinking worse at night?
This is a question I get asked a lot. “Why does my brain start up the minute I want to go sleep?”
During the day, there are distractions. Work. Conversations. Noise. Movement. Busyness.
At night, everything slows down. So the emotions underneath have space to step forward. So your mind steps in to manage things in the only way it knows how…Overthinking. Which is why it can feel relentless when things are silent and those quieter moments at night.
In case you’re still wondering…
Why can’t I just stop thinking?
Because your mind is trying to protect you from feeling your feelings.
Is overthinking anxiety?
Yes, it can be one of the ways that anxiety shows up.
Will I always feel like this?
When your learn to name and allow your feelings, your nervous system will learn that it is safe to feel, and the need to overthink will start to reduce.
